Introducing the Town of Kamifurano
Location& Geographical Features
Kamifurano is located in the northem part of the Furano Basin in the center of Hokkaido.Mt.Tokachidake of Daisetu-Zan National Park rises on the spreads to the south,and the boundary of Kamikawa and Sorachi spreads to the south, and the boundary of Kamikawa and Sorachi counties lies to the north.Location: Longitude 142 degrees 41'25"East/Latitude 44 degrees 32'55"North-Area:237.18 square kilometers/24.6 km from east to west,19.0 km from north to south
The area was reclaimed by eight pioneers in 1897.
After the present Furano city gained independence of this area in 1903, and the present Nakafurano town in 1917,the remaining area became the present-day Kamifurano town.The initial population of Kamifurano was 9,786,with 1,702 households.
These figures greatly increased when agarrison of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces was established in 1955.In 1958,the population totaled over 19,000. The present population as of the end of October 2008 is 12,209 with 5,363 households.
The annual average temperature in Kamifurano town is relatively warm at 5.8℃,but there is a large difference between the temperature in summer(average 26℃) and winter (average-15), demonstrating a typical continental climate.In the summer,mild southwesterly winds and warm temperatures provide an excellent environment for agriculture.
The history of Kamifurano began on April 12,1897 when a party of eight pioneers led by Tsunejiro Tanaka of Mie prefecture came to this area buoyant with hopes of developing Hokkaido, and slept at the foot of a tree on a hill still covered with snow. Since then, numerous painstaking efforts were made to start a village. Once a village was created, it was further developed into a town. Kamifurano celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding in 1998.Kamifurano,with the splendor of its natural landscape centering on Mt.Tokachidake,its fertile land, and peaceful appearance of its streets, is indeed the proud product of hundred years of efforts made by generations of predecessors.After the present Furano city gained independence of this area in 1903, and the present Nakafurano town in 1917, the remaining area became the present-day Kamifurano town.It aims to become an active and attractive town centering on agriculture as its main industry. as well as on commerce and industry, the Self-Defense Forces, and tourism.
